Reflection

Larger Catechism, #127  What is the honor that inferiors owe to their superiors?

The honor which inferiors owe to their superiors is, all due reverence in heart, word, and behavior; prayer and thanksgiving for them; imitation of their virtues and graces; willing obedience to their lawful commands and counsels; due submission to their corrections; fidelity to, defense, and maintenance of their persons and authority, according to their several ranks, and the nature of their places; bearing with their infirmities, and covering them in love, that so they may be an honor to them and to their government.

Welcome

A special welcome to the Men’s Choir from Asbury United Methodist Church, which will be leading us in serving the Lord in music today.

Praise

Call to Worship— Psalm 103:13-14, 22

Leader:          13As a father shows compassion to his children, so the LORD shows compassion to those who fear him. 14For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust.   22Bless the LORD, all his works, in all places of his dominion.  Bless the LORD, O my soul!

Song of Praise— In Christ Alone

In Christ alone my hope is found,

He is my light, my strength, my song;

This Cornerstone, this solid ground,

Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.

What heights of love, what depths of peace,

When fears are stilled, what strivings cease!

My Comforter, my All in All,

Here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone!—who took on flesh,

Fullness of God in helpless babe!

This gift of love and righteousness,

Scorned by the ones he came to save:

Till on that cross as Jesus died,

The wrath of God was satisfied—

For every sin on him was laid;

Here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground his body lay,

Light of the world by darkness slain:

Then bursting forth in glorious Day

Up from the grave he rose again!

And as he stands in victory

Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me,

For I am his and he is mine—

Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death,

This is the power of Christ in me;

From life’s first cry to final breath,

Jesus commands my destiny.

No power of hell, no scheme of man,

Can ever pluck me from his hand;

Till he returns or calls me home,

Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand!

Renewal

Scripture Reading— Exodus 20:12

Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.

Heidelberg Catechism #104

What is God’s will for you in the fifth commandment?

That I honor, love and be loyal to my father and mother and all those in     authority over me; that I obey and submit to them, as is proper, when they  correct and punish me; and also that I be patient with their failings – for through them God chooses to rule us.

Private Confession

Praise Songs— Marvelous Grace of Our Loving Lord

Grace Alone

Ev'ry promise we can make,

Ev'ry prayer and step of faith,

Ev'ry diff'rence we can make,

Is only by His grace.

Ev'ry mountain we will climb,

Ev'ry ray of hope we shine,

Ev'ry blessing left behind,

Is only by His grace.

 Grace alone, which God supplies.

Strength unknown He will provide.

Christ in us our cornerstone

We will go forth in grace alone.

Ev'ry soul we long to reach,

Ev'ry heart we hope to teach,

Ev'rywhere we share His peace,

Is only by His grace.

Ev'ry loving word we say,

Ev'ry tear we wipe away,

Ev'ry sorrow turned to praise,

       Is only by His grace.

Sermon Text— Ephesians 6:1-4

 1Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2"Honor your father and mother" (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3"that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land." 4Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
