Reflection

Take this rule:  whatever weakens your reason, impairs the tenderness of your conscience, obscures your sense of God, or takes off the relish of spiritual things; in short, whatever increases the strength and authority of your body over your mind, that thing is sin to you, however innocent it may be in itself.

—Mrs. Wesley, mother of John and Charles Wesley

Genuine romance, such as we find modeled in the Song (of Solomon) is meant to be a growing reality within every Christian marriage, not a dimming memory. … Everything I say to my wife teaches her something about how I value her. … The husband is responsible for leading and cultivating romance in the marital relationship. If it is led by the wife, or by no one, that love will take on a different, lesser character. It will not be a love that accurately reflects the relationship between Christ and the church.                                                                                              —CJ Mahaney

Prelude

    Praise

Call to Worship— Psalm 99:1-3

Leader:             The LORD reigns; let the peoples tremble!

People:            He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake!

Leader:             The LORD is great in Zion;

People:            He is exalted over all the peoples.

Leader:             Let them praise your great and awesome name!

Together:        Holy is he!

Hymn of Praise— Holy, Holy, Holy

Prayer of Adoration

 Sing to God’s Praise—

Worthy is the Lamb

Worthy Is the Lamb who was slain.

Worthy Is the Lamb who was slain

Worthy Is the Lamb who was slain

To receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength

And honor and glory and praise.

Great and marvelous are your deeds, Lord God Almighty

Just and true are your ways, King of Ages

Who shall not fear you, O Lord?

And glorify your name?

For you alone are holy,

All nations shall come and worship before you

Your righteous acts have been revealed.

 Sing to the Lord

Sing to the Lord a new song,

His praise in the assembly of saints.

Israel rejoice in your Maker;

People of Zion be glad in your King.

Praise His name with dancing

And make music to Him with tambourine and harp.

Praise the Lord!  Praise the Lord!

Praise the Lord!  Praise the Lord!

Praise our God! Hallelujah!  Praise his name!

For the Lord delights in his people;

He crowns the humble with salvation.

Let the saints rejoice in this honor

And sing for joy on their beds.

Renewal

Confession of Faith— HC;  #88-91

88  Q.  What is involved in genuine repentance or conversion?

 A.  Two things:

the dying-away of the old self,
and the coming-to-life of the new.

89  Q.  What is the dying-away of the old self?

   A.  It is to be genuinely sorry for sin, to hate it more and more, and to run away from it.

90  Q.  What is the coming-to-life of the new self?

 A.  It is the wholehearted joy in God through Christ and a delight to do every kind of good as God wants us to.

91  Q.  What do we do that is good?

A.  Only that which arises out of true faith, conforms to God’s law, and is done for his glory; and not that which is based on what we think is right or on established human tradition.

Prayer of Confession—

Our Father and our God, we bow before you to humbly confess our sins.

We have hungered and thirsted after forbidden pleasures more than we have for your righteousness, and we have been left unsatisfied. Have mercy   on us!

We have indulged in impure desires, thoughts, and even acts, and so have been unable to see and savor your glory. Have mercy on us!

Give us grace to walk as children of light, in newness of life in Christ. Let us treasure your good gift of sexuality. Let us receive thankfully your calling as single men or women, or as those married.

MEN: Let us honor and protect all women as weaker vessels; especially as married men living sacrificially with our wives.

WOMEN: Let us respect men as servant leaders; patiently submitting to them in church and home.

May our marriages reflect the beauty, intimacy and faithfulness of Jesus’ relationship with us, his glorious bride. AMEN.

Private Confession

Joyful Response to God’s Mercy— I will Glory in My Redeemer

I will glory in my Redeemer

Whose priceless blood has ransomed me

Mine was the sin that drove the bitter nails

And hung him on that judgment tree

I will glory in my Redeemer

Who crushed the power of sin and death

My only Savior before the holy Judge

The Lamb who is my righteousness

The Lamb who is my righteousness.

I will glory in my Redeemer

My life he bought, my love he owns.

I have no longings for another

I’m satisfied in him alone

I will glory in my Redeemer

His faithfulness my standing place

Though foes are mighty and rush upon me

My feet are firm held by his grace

My feet are firm held by his grace.

I will glory in my Redeemer

Who carries me on eagle’s wings

He crowns my life with loving kindness

His triumph song I’ll ever sing

I will glory in my Redeemer

Who waits for me at gates of gold

And when he calls me it will be paradise

His face forever to behold

His face forever to behold.

Sermon Text— Ephesians 5:8b-10

Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord.

Offering God our Wealth/Offertory

Praise to Triune God— Join All the Glorious Names

Join all the glorious names of wisdom love and pow’r

That mortals ever knew, that angels ever bore,

All are too poor to speak your vast and priceless worth,

Too poor to set my Savior forth.

  Jesus, your name is glorious,

Our Prophet, Priest, and King.

Jesus, you’re reigning over us

And forevermore your praises we will sing.

Great Prophet of my God, my tongue would bless your name,

Through You the joyful news of our salvation came.

The long-awaited news of ev’ry sin forgiv’n

Of hell subdued and peace with Heav’n.

Jesus my Great High Priest, you shed your blood and died,

My guilty conscience seeks no sacrifice beside.

Your pure and precious blood for all my sin atoned

And now it pleads before the throne.
